I’m always excited by exploring new artistic paths ranging from the abstract to the highly figurative, 2D & 3D and use a variety of materials on which to paint including metal, glass as well as the Acrylic which aims to give the painting a physical as well as illusionistic edge. The modes, materials and surfaces of the work change in response to the varying needs of reflecting different experiences and ideas, whether this be in urban, rural, geographical or historical contexts.
My recent work on Acrylic Perspex tries to take painting into new spatial areas in representing the world around us by creating an experience that subtly shifts and changes as the viewer moves around them. The translucent layers of Perspex give an incredible sense of depth and help carry light through the paintings. These separate painted layers create a spatial effect which mimics the experience of foregrounds moving in relation to the more static background layers.
I’m interested in the borders between the figurative effects of the paint and the abstracted physicality of it. Slaps of fat impasto and oozing fluid areas play against the more detailed textures and colours.
I have recently returned to the Buckinghamshire countryside after living in London for over 20 years and having travelled to China, Japan, Thailand, Australia, India, Chile and the US amongst other places.
